Handgun Grip Enhancement

by MJ Woodland

Those who know me on a personal level can attest to my training being compared to looking for the perfect solution to any equation. The correct answer will be there is not a perfect solution, but the more you practice something you have a better chance of eliminating results that could be detrimental to you and your loved ones.

Depending on who you talk with, some people want to put more emphasis on different fundamentals. There are cases where you could be a natural in sight alignment but your grip is not the best. With all the dry firing I do on a daily basis, my thought process has me not being concerned with trigger pull but focused on other factors when I do shoot. For the past month, with all the training that was being conducted by me, grip was my biggest focus.

The griping of your firearm can come in two forms. The first being on how you hold it when you are training and firing. The second being any form of altercation to your pistol grip to enhance your physical grip of the firearm. This is something that was playing on my mind for a while after talking to a buddy that works at the local gun store. The discussion started while observing the few people on the firing range who were patrons, and both of our conclusions were their grip (along with other factors) would give them a better outcome.

For those interested in enhancing their firearms performance have an option of getting a sleeve that can slide over your pistol grip giving it both grip as well as a more natural feel. Depending on the person and the size of your hand, there are different sizes and textures of sleeves giving the pistol grip a more natural feel in your hand. I ended up taking the route of stippling my hand grip. Since the feel of the Smith & Wesson is already comfortable in my hand, there was no need for any add ons like a sleeve for the hand grip. The stippling enhances the firearm with two positive outcomes. The first being that your initial grip has a better reference point with the raised texture and the second being that if you do encounter a situation where your hand is slippery from a slick substance, (oil, liquid soap, or blood) the stippling will assist with the firearm not coming out of your hand as easy.

In conclusion there are companies that can do a terrific job of stippling your firearm, but do your research before you send it off. The drawback is you will not have your firearm in your possession for about two to three weeks, and that is only if there is no backlog from the company of your choosing. Another option is to purchase a soldering iron and invest in some personal time with your firearm. Come up with a design that fits your personality by doing it yourself or take my route...Keep It Simple and Safe (KISS but I don't like the word stupid so I replace it with safe) and while doing it yourself just stay within the lines.
