The number of school shootings that have taken place have many people questioning what will we do next. The president was quoted asking what are we to do when there is a shooting it seems to be every week. It is a sad thought when the warped mind of a person targets a group of people who do not have the means to defend themselves.
In 2013, there were 32 reported incidents of school related shootings, and in 2014, there were nearly just as many with a total of 31 incidents being reported. These events are tragic but some of these instances might have been prevented if someone had only seen the signs before the event. A friend, family member, or teacher should have noticed the warning signs that triggered the assailant. A student at a high school in Bend, Oregon committed suicide in the presence of other classmates without harming anyone else. Since nobody else was injured does not make this act justifiable? This could have been avoided if family, friends, and teachers had spotted and communicated the signs that the student who shot them self needed help.
There are many incidents to look at and try to figure out why people perform attacks on school grounds. For example, in the attack on Columbine High in Colorado back in 1999 it was later discovered that the two gunmen had the beliefs associated with those who carried out the Oklahoma City bombings. The attacks on Virginia Tech were done by a lone gunmen who later was discovered to be mentally ill. His prior acts of being mentally unstable were noted in school records however there were some confusing laws in place regarding the sharing of student information between schools. That was the start of many mistakes that took place.
How can we all become proactive in order to avoid any further incidents? We need to educate the teachers and students that guns do not kill people, but people with harmful intent with guns kill people. Even if you take a gun out of the equation there are many avenues that a subject with the intent to harm others could be exposed to. There are various forms of weapons to be used. The truth is just about anything can be used as a weapon. Anyone has access to simple things such as knives, baseball bats, wrenches, belts, or even a piece of broken glass wrapped in a cloth. What about the person who takes the time to make a exploding device out of homemade materials? We as citizens need to stop pointing the finger at guns and crying about the laws that protect us. Instead we should focus on becoming more proactive in protecting our own communities within the boundaries of the law and educate our teachers and parents to be more situationally aware
